CommonLit is a nonprofit EdTech organization dedicated to providing high-quality literacy instruction to low-income students and students of color to prepare them for success in college and careers. We operate a free online reading and writing program,  , that is used by millions of teachers and students worldwide each month. We are a quickly growing team of passionate professionals - many of whom are former teachers. Our team is now over 120 full-time employees spread across ~30 states.

The Opportunity

With over $8M in earned revenue last year and thousands of paying school districts, CommonLit is looking for a Principal Marketing Manager to lead our retention strategy with the goal of increasing customer lifetime value and engagement. In this role, you’ll have the opportunity to shape the retention function within the marketing team. We’re looking for someone with strong technical skills in campaign automation, who is capable of both creating campaigns and providing strategic leadership for various retention channels (e.g. email, in-product, and webinars). The ideal candidate is an effective leader, data-driven, customer-centric, and a stellar cross-functional collaborator. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred or relevant experience
  • 5-7 years of marketing experience with at least 2-3 years of retention marketing experience
  • Proven marketing chops for all core facets of email marketing, including: deliverability, lifecycle strategy, data analysis, segmentation and targeting, and A/B testing
  • A technical expert with hands-on experience building nurture campaigns from scratch
  • An entrepreneurial spirit; conceive of and establish reports to analyze performance
  • Strong analytical skills; familiarity with propensity models and stitching together in-product behaviors to inform, nurture, and win back campaigns
  • Strong mentor and go-getter who thrives in building new functions on teams without a blueprint
  • HubSpot domain expert
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and execute with a high degree of accuracy and quality
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally in a fast-paced environment with Account Management, Engineering, Analytics, Product, and Support teams
  • Preferred: interest in the education space or EdTech experience

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Adept at managing projects with the aptitude and interest to grow into a management role
  • Lead retention strategy and implementation for customers through:
  • Nudging users to complete specific tasks
  • Developing automated campaigns based on customer health metrics
  • Creating winback campaigns to re-engage customers
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, Marketing, and Account Management on strategy of in-product nudges and upsell opportunities for customers
  • Liaise between Marketing and Account Management teams across multiple projects and campaigns (rebrand, back-to-school, in-app redesign, tutorials, video concepts, collateral, etc.)
  • Liaise between Marketing, Account Management, and customer training teams around webinar promotion and strategy
  • Lead internal trainings around email copy best practices
  • Lead strategy and implementation of email automation for free users
  • Monitor and track KPIs
  • Passion for the education industry and desire to keep up with market trends

  • This role involves prolonged periods sitting/standing at a desk and working on a computer
  • CommonLit will provide a computer and necessary software to complete the role
