We are seeking a compassionate, detail-oriented Medical Assistant to join our small, dynamic, multi-disciplinary team providing healthcare to individuals experiencing homelessness. As a vital team member, you will support medical providers by preparing patients for visits, assisting during examinations, performing routine clinical tasks, and coordinating follow-up care. This position is ideal for someone committed to health equity, patient-centered care, and improving the lives of underserved populations through accessible, respectful, and high-quality healthcare.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Patient Care & Clinical Support
  • Greet and room patients in a trauma-informed, respectful, and non-judgmental environment.
  • Perform clinical tasks including measuring and documenting vital signs, conducting health screenings, and preparing patients for exams and procedures.
  • Assist providers with examinations, treatments, and minor in-office procedures.
  • Conduct and document point-of-care testing (e.g., urinalysis, glucose checks, rapid diagnostic tests) in accordance with protocols.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date, and HIPAA-compliant electronic health records.
Care Coordination & Patient Advocacy
  • Support patients in completing forms and understanding care instructions.
  • Connect uninsured patients to the Financial Case Manager for assistance with coverage or benefits.
  • Educate patients about preventive health measures, follow-up care, and available support resources.
  • Advocate for patient needs by facilitating connections to housing, food access, behavioral health, and other social services.
Clinic Operations
  • Prepare and stock exam rooms; ensure cleanliness and readiness of clinical areas.
  • Monitor and manage medical supply inventory, ensuring timely restocking.
  • Provide cross-coverage for registration, scheduling, and phone support as needed.
  • Answer and route phone calls from patients, pharmacies, and community partners.
Team Collaboration
  • Participate in team huddles and case review meetings to support holistic, coordinated care planning.
  • Collaborate with medical providers, behavioral health specialists, case managers, and outreach staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Attend staff meetings, trainings, and ongoing professional development opportunities.
OTHER DUTIES
  • Demonstrate respectful, professional and appropriate behavior that supports a team oriented work environment.

  • Attend staff meetings, in-service meetings and participate in agency committees and task force activities as required.
  • Train other staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENCSURE, & CERTIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant training program preferred; will consider equivalent experience such as one (1) year of work as a Patient Care Technician, EMT, or similar clinical support role.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in a healthcare or community health setting preferred, especially in primary care, urgent care, or public health environments.
  • Experience working with marginalized or underserved populations, including people experiencing homelessness, is highly desirable.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) skills a plus.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Understanding of basic clinical procedures, vital signs, and infection control practices.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, documentation standards, and patient safety protocols.
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA regulations and principles of patient confidentiality.
  • Awareness of social determinants of health and their impact on patient well-being.
  • Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and general computer literacy.
  • Strong clinical support skills, including patient triage, documentation, and assisting with in-office procedures.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Effective organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to build rapport with patients from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, using a trauma-informed and nonjudgmental approach.
  • Demonstrated empathy, patience, and professionalism in high-stress or emotionally complex situations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Willingness to adapt to changing workflows and priorities in a community-based care model.
